The story of Arturo Fuente begins with the Cuban-born Arturo Fuente, who emigrated to Key West, Florida, in 1906. Born in 1887, he learned the art of cigar making from his father at a young age. At just 24 years old, he founded the factory A. Fuente & Co. in West Tampa in 1912, where he handcrafted cigars using Cuban tobacco. Within twelve years, the company grew to nearly 500 employees before a devastating fire destroyed the entire factory and brought production to a halt.
The Unwavering Passion of the Fuente Family
After more than 20 years without production, Arturo Fuente ventured a restart at nearly 60 years old. Despite the challenging years of the Great Depression and World War II, he resumed cigar making and encouraged his family to support him. The company experienced slow but steady growth. In 1958, Arturo Fuente handed over the company for a symbolic one dollar to his youngest son, Carlos Fuente Sr.
The success story took another turn when, in 1979, the factory burned down again during the Nicaraguan Revolution. Undeterred, Carlos Fuente mortgaged his family home and reopened the business in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This decision laid the foundation for future global success.
