During his 30 years on the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, he experimented with exotic plants and herbs that were scarcely known in Europe at the time. However, Riise became famous primarily for his exquisite rum.

Albert Heinrich Riise, as his full name was, was a curious and passionate researcher. After completing his training at the pharmacy in his hometown of Ærøskøbing, he moved to Copenhagen to study botany and chemistry—sciences that were still in their infancy at the beginning of the 19th century.
