In 1959, a talented young man, William Ashton Taylor, began his career at Alfred Dunhill. At just 15 years old, he started as a turner, laying the foundation for a remarkable career that would later establish him as one of the leading names in the world of pipes: the creator of Ashton pipes.
The Success Story of Ashton Pipes
William "Bill" Taylor began his training at Dunhill Pipes. Young apprentices like him started with simple tasks, such as cleaning wood scraps and running errands for experienced craftsmen. However, Bill's passion and talent for pipe-making stood out early on. He would take discarded pipe parts home and hone his skills. Under the guidance of Harry Saigrott, one of Dunhill's master craftsmen, Bill learned the art of mouthpiece crafting and continually expanded his expertise.
Founding the Ashton Brand
In the 1980s, Bill Taylor decided to establish his own company to realize his vision of perfection in pipe-making. From the very beginning, Ashton emphasized the highest quality in craftsmanship and materials. With innovative techniques like the patented Oil Curing process, Ashton set new standards. This process reduces the weight of the pipes and gives them their distinctive smoking character. Bill always emphasized the equal importance of the bowl and the mouthpiece, with both being crafted with precision from the finest materials.
Briarwood – The Heart of Every Ashton Pipe
Bill Taylor personally selected the briarwood, traveling regularly to Italy to secure the finest material directly from the best sawmills. For smooth-finished pipes, he preferred Calabrian briarwood, while Tuscan wood was chosen for sandblasted models. These woods provide unique grain patterns and a pleasant texture, making Ashton pipes unmistakable.
The Oil-Curing Process
Inspired by Dunhill, William Ashton Taylor further developed the Oil Curing process. This involves heating the briar pipe bowls and soaking them in natural oils. This process removes impurities and gives the wood a nutty flavor. Under the current leadership of Jimmy Craig, this process remains a hallmark of Ashton pipes.
