Black Label Trading Company: Unique Design and Exceptional Enjoyment
The distinctive packaging of the Black Label Trading Company is a true eye-catcher – as importer Martina Kleinlagel also found. The unconventional designs, featuring two-tone illustrations of skulls, animal bones, or Dürer’s praying hands with tattooed fingers, are absolutely unique. These artistic cigar boxes, which she discovered at the IPCPR 2019, left a lasting impression. Thanks to this special moment, the cigars are now also available in Germany.
A Visionary Couple
The brand was founded by Americans Angela and James Brown, originally from Texas. After their wedding, the couple set out to explore the world, eventually settling in Nicaragua. Initially, they organized guided off-road tours, immersing themselves in the country’s breathtaking nature. Before long, they also discovered Nicaragua’s cultural treasures. Their passion for cigars grew, leading them to create their own blends.
Tabacalera Oveja Negra: The Home of Black Label Trading Company
The Black Label Trading Company produces its cigars in its own factory, the Tabacalera Oveja Negra, which translates to “The Black Sheep.” This name symbolizes the company’s underdog mentality, shining through its exceptional attention to detail and dedication despite its modest size. The factory is renowned for producing top-tier boutique cigars that captivate a loyal global following with their unique designs.

James Brown is the creative force behind the brand, meticulously designing the artwork, cigar bands, and distinctive packaging. His wife Angela manages social media marketing. The cigars are characterized by bold blends featuring rich Nicaraguan tobacco, catering primarily to experienced aficionados who appreciate complex flavors. They are less suited for beginners or as mild morning cigars.
The Diversity of Black Label Trading Company Cigars
The brand debuted in the U.S. market in 2013 with four lines: Lawless, Salvation, Royalty, and Last Rites. A standout is the later-developed Viaticum, an evolution of the successful Last Rites blend. Other highlights include the powerful Morph and the strictly limited Super Deluxe.
Recent additions to the portfolio include the Orthodox, boasting an intense Nicaraguan character, the mild Deliverance, and the spectacular Santa Muerte, which stands out for its striking artwork.

Under the sister brand Black Works Studio, you’ll find exceptional and experimental cigars, including the fascinating Killer Bee and Hyena lines.
