A career as a pipe maker today requires not only passion but also a clear vision and courage. Born in 1989, Michele Brentegani took this bold step and dedicated himself entirely to pipe making. His dedication and creativity deeply impressed us, which is why we decided to include his unique pipes in our selection at Zigarrenwelt.
A Multitalent from Verona
Michele Brentegani hails from the Italian city of Verona. In addition to his love for music, he was early on involved in various woodworking projects. Whether bows or flutes, his craftsmanship was versatile. After earning a degree in traditional Chinese medicine and Tuina massage, he found his way to pipe making in 2015. Inspired by a friend smoking a Churchwarden pipe, he carved his first pipe bowl out of a piece of wood.
Brebbia: A Stroke of Luck
In search of a suitable mouthpiece, he turned to the Italian pipe manufacturer Brebbia. Initially, he was told that mouthpieces were only available in bulk. However, an unexpected gift—three mouthpieces sent to him free of charge—ignited his passion. To this day, Michele feels a strong connection to this traditional brand.
The Development of Michele Brentegani
At first, Brentegani taught himself pipe making in a self-taught manner. Through exchanges with experienced pipe makers, he steadily gained expertise. In 2020, he became a member of the Academia della Pipa Italiana, founded by Mimmo Romeo (Romeo Pipes). His interaction with other artists like Gabriele Dal Fiume, Davide Iafisco, and Gioacchino Sauro shaped his style and inspired him to go independent in 2020.

The works of Michele Brentegani reflect the influences of the Danish school, combined with great respect for English classicism. Particularly, the creation of freehand pipes requires exceptional craftsmanship. He primarily uses high-quality briarwood and morta. Increasingly, he also works with olivewood, which he values for its distinctive grain and workability.
Characteristic of his work are the azure blue ebonite mouthpieces, which have become a trademark. At first glance, it’s clear: “This is a Brentegani Pipe!”
