Bruno Nuttens Pipes: Perfection Born of Passion
Bruno Nuttens, a talented Belgian who has lived in France for several years, has dedicated himself to the art of pipe making. His passion for pipe smoking led him in 2012 to acquire a collection of old pipes. He personally restored them, teaching himself numerous techniques essential for repairing historical pipes.
In 2013, he visited the traditional "pipe mecca" of St. Claude in France. There, he met Pierre Morel, an experienced freehand pipe maker. From him, he learned valuable skills and gained access to old machinery, vital for pipe making, which had been stored in abandoned warehouses in St. Claude.
The Unique Pipes of Bruno Nuttens
In 2016, Bruno Nuttens began crafting his own pipes. To further refine his skills, he completed an internship with Danish pipe legend Tom Eltang. There, he learned a fresh approach that emphasized aesthetics. This experience shaped his determination to continuously strive for perfection and evolve his craft.
For the past two years, Bruno Nuttens has dedicated himself full-time to pipe making. He left his previous career in IT—a bold move that has proven successful. Alongside his craftsmanship, he uses modern platforms and social media to showcase his work to a broader audience.
Masterful Craftsmanship
Bruno Nuttens' pipes bear a distinctive signature. Some models are reminiscent of the intricate "spaghetti shanks" by Paolo Becker, while others draw inspiration from Italian classics. Particularly popular are his "Bings," elegant billiard pipes with extra-thin shanks. Due to their construction, these are not suited for 9mm filters; however, some models can accommodate 6mm filters.
The models are specially designed for the increasingly popular Gizeh activated charcoal filters. Larger pipes, on the other hand, are suitable for 9mm filters.
Handcrafted, Traditional, Unique: Bruno Nuttens Pipes
Bruno Nuttens offers three different pipe qualities, each distinguished by a special production method:
- Handmade: Completely free-formed bowls with handcrafted stems, allowing the artist full creative freedom.
- Heritage: Pipes made from 30- to 60-year-old pre-turned bowls acquired from an old stock in St. Claude.
- Vintage: Pipes crafted from old Algerian wood of the highest quality, often combined with antique silver accents.
The Philosophy Behind His Pipes
Bruno Nuttens adheres to a clear philosophy: functionality takes precedence over design. His pipes are tools for enjoying tobacco to the fullest. Aesthetics, while important, remain secondary. A distinctive feature is the use of aged wood, which is particularly valuable due to its age and dryness. Despite their exclusivity, his pipes remain affordable: prices range from €130–140 to a maximum of €500.
