Since its founding by Heiko Behrens in 1972, Dan Pipe has made a name for itself as a renowned specialist retailer for Danish pipes and mail-order tobacco. To counteract fluctuations in batches and production bottlenecks, the company decided in 1991 to establish its own pipe tobacco production.
The company set up its operations in a historic malting house in Lauenburg, near Hamburg, and today runs a fully equipped tobacco manufactory there. This is where specialties such as exquisite flake tobaccos are pressed and processed on-site. This step allowed Dan Tobacco to fully break away from pre-produced Danish tobacco blends.

Dan Tobacco, also known by the abbreviation DTM, has earned an excellent reputation, particularly with flavored tobaccos. Only natural flavors are used, their quality evident as soon as one steps into the manufactory. Michael Apitz, who also manages the retail store, is the creative mind behind new blends and is known for his affinity for Danish tobaccos.
Particularly popular is the S.V.H. (formerly Sweet Vanilla Honeydew). Its unmistakable aroma comes from a blend of natural vanilla essences and a gently fruity casing. Unlike many other vanilla tobaccos, Dan Tobacco does not rely on Black Cavendish but instead uses a light, slightly pressed Ready Rubbed Virginia, which impresses with its high content of natural essences.

Natural tobacco lovers will also find something to enjoy at Dan Tobacco. The company offers a fine selection of flakes distinguished by the high quality of the raw tobaccos used. An outstanding example is the Virginia Perique Flake St. Bernard, refined with authentic St. James Perique from the USA. Unlike Danish flakes, these are not glued together but instead bonded through pressing and heating, giving them a pleasantly loose texture.
