Design Berlin: Exquisite Pipes from Thuringia
Design Berlin pipes enjoy great popularity in Germany, as they are distributed by the renowned Planta Tobacco Manufactory, whose products are available in numerous specialty stores.
The brand's origins date back to 1948, when Hubert Hartmann founded the Hartmann Pipe Studio in Berlin. The first craftsmen came from Ruhla, once the heart of German pipe production in Thuringia. Initially, the company focused on affordable "Mutz" or shag pipes with nylon mouthpieces, primarily used for fine-cut tobacco. In 1954, Lothar Schirwitz joined the company and initiated a strategic shift towards higher-quality pipes inspired by Danish design.
The Evolution of Design Berlin Pipes
With the introduction of premium briarwood from Greece, the smoking experience was further refined. This material, carefully aged before processing, offers a more enjoyable smoke than conventional woods. In 1975, the brand was renamed DB Design Berlin, and the 9-mm filter chamber became increasingly integrated into the pipes, catering to the needs of discerning pipe smokers. Lothar Schirwitz, a visionary manager, was also a talented freehand pipe maker, though he never placed his creations at the center of attention.
A Turning Point in History
In the early 1980s, Dr. Manfred Obermann's Planta Tobacco Manufactory acquired the company to capitalize on synergies with tobacco distribution.

This move helped DB pipes gain international recognition. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the company took over the production facilities of the former VEB Pfeifen- und Holzerzeugnisse Bad Liebenstein (HOWAL) and relocated production to Schweina. Work continued in a building that once belonged to Germany’s largest pipe factory, C. S. Reich. During this time, Lothar Schirwitz succeeded Rudolf Apelt, who went on to focus on freehand pipe making.
Current Production
Today, production is led by Martin Schmalz and a team of twelve employees. With an annual output of approximately 30,000 pipes, DB Design Berlin is one of Germany's leading pipe manufacturers, second only to Vauen. This ensures that DB continues to preserve the rich heritage of Thuringia’s traditional pipe industry.
Distinctive Pipes by Design Berlin
One standout feature of DB pipes is the innovative dual smoke channel in the mouthpiece, which provides a pleasant cooling effect and optimized airflow. The designs range from classic and elegant to avant-garde. Models like the "Weltkugel" shape the brand’s unique style. In addition to high-quality series pipes, exquisite freehand models are also produced.

All pipes are equipped with high-quality acrylic mouthpieces and feature a 9-mm filter chamber. Various surface finishes highlight the collection’s diversity, including smooth stained, lacquered, sandblasted, and intricately rusticated pipes. Particularly prized are exclusive models such as the Holger Danske series, NOS Unique Special, and the Limited Edition "Le Cœur de la France," which impress with their distinctive style.
Design Berlin Pipes: Tradition Meets Innovation
A standout feature is the modern laser engraving machine, which allows for customized branding on each pipe. This enables specialty retailers to create their own private label series. Additionally, DB excels in silver craftsmanship, making authentic silver-spigot pipes available at attractive prices. Whether as a reliable everyday companion or an extraordinary collector’s item, a DB pipe is an excellent choice for discerning pipe smokers of all experience levels.
