The family tradition of tobacco cultivation runs deep: Roger’s great-grandmother already operated a small tobacco business, while his grandfather exported raw tobacco from Nicaragua to the world.
The Legend of Don Duarte and Nicaraguan Cigar Culture
Convinced of the quality of local tobacco, Roger Duarte Rodriguez consistently relies on Nicaraguan raw materials. In 2001, he met Evelio Oviedo, one of Cuba’s most legendary master blenders. Their collaboration shaped the brand’s development for almost a decade.
Oviedo, known for his passion and outstanding expertise, was responsible for blending the hand-rolled long fillers. After his sudden passing in 2009, this special partnership ended, but his influence remains evident in the compositions of the Don Duarte brand.
Villa Vieja and Don Duarte: A New Era
Today, the Don Duarte brand belongs to experienced cigar dealer Fernando Navarro, who, after 20 years as an importer and retailer, ventured into production. Alongside Don Duarte, he is also behind the renowned Villa Vieja brand.
Don Duarte Cigars Over Time
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the brand experienced a significant increase in demand. This led to a change in the production facility to meet growing requirements. At the same time, optimizations in the blends were made to further refine quality and flavor.
The latest formats of the Don Duarte Clasico Golden feature a fine Ecuadorian wrapper, while the rest of the tobacco leaves traditionally come from Nicaragua. These exquisite cigars are available exclusively in Germany at Zigarrenwelt. In addition to the Clasico Golden line, the Don Duarte Reserva Privada is also available—the brand’s most prestigious series, impressing connoisseurs with its intense and complex aroma profile.
