Exclusiv Pipe Tobacco: The Origins
On December 24, 1902, Alois Pöschl founded the "Brasiltabakfabrik A. Pöschl & Cie." in Landshut. With limited capital, he began producing Schmalzler snuff tobacco, a traditional Bavarian specialty. The location on the Isar River provided optimal conditions for operating tobacco mills.
Around 1920, Pöschl introduced a trademark: a "P" within an octagon. The product range expanded rapidly, soon including the tobacco-free "Schneeling" and the Schmalzler "Doppelaroma," which remains a bestseller to this day.
Challenges, Reconstruction, and Growth After 1948
The turmoil of World War II presented major challenges for the company. After the war, the founder’s sons, Wilhelm and Alois Pöschl, took over management, secured raw materials, and continued rebuilding production facilities.
With the currency reform of 1948, the product range was expanded to offset economic losses. Hansa Krüll Pipe Tobacco and Adria Fine Cut were introduced. Pöschl also successfully established pipe tobacco in its assortment and launched the sought-after Exclusiv series in the mid-1960s, ushering in a new phase of growth.
Internationalization, Innovation, and Expansion
In 1979, the third generation took over the company's leadership and built a global distribution network. In 1995, Pöschl established a state-of-the-art production facility in Geisenhausen to meet growing demand.
As early as 1971, the company introduced the globally successful snuff tobacco brand "Gletscherprise." In 1994, the " Red Bull" fine-cut line followed. In 2006, Pöschl launched the additive-free fine-cut tobacco "Pueblo" and began its own cigarette production in 2008.
Pöschl and Exclusiv: Progress and Modernization
Since 2006, the company has been led by the fourth generation. Under their leadership, innovative products such as Pueblo fine-cut tobacco were introduced, and international reach expanded to over 100 countries. In 2011, Pöschl achieved its highest sales volume in company history, exceeding 6,000,000 kg.
Today, Pöschl is among the leading suppliers of snuff tobacco and pipe tobacco. The company maintains a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. In 2012, production capacity in Geisenhausen was further expanded with a new facility.
