The origins of Old St. Croix Rums are inseparably linked to the name A. H. Riise. The Danish pharmacist combined scientific curiosity with entrepreneurial foresight, creating distillates that attracted attention far beyond the Caribbean. During his decades-long work on St. Thomas, he devoted himself intensively to the local flora – yet it was his rum that ultimately established his lasting renown.
Old St. Croix Rum and A. H. Riise – From Denmark to the Caribbean
Albert Heinrich Riise, trained in Ærøskøbing and later a student of botany and chemistry in Copenhagen, belonged to a generation that combined new scientific insights with practical application. In 1838, he answered the call to the West Indies. On what were then the Danish Virgin Islands, he not only developed pharmaceutical preparations but also laid the foundation for what is now internationally recognized as Old St. Croix Rum.
The proximity to sugar cane plantations and distilleries inspired Riise to develop his own recipes. What initially also served medicinal purposes quickly evolved into a sought-after indulgence. Its quality gained recognition as far as Europe, where it was honored with awards.
