Romeo Pipe Freehand

Romeo Domenico – usually called Mimmo by friends and business partners – was, in a sense, born with a special passion. Responsible for this is the proverbial “briar wood gene” he inherited from his father.

His father, Romeo Filippo, ran a traditional briar wood mill. There, so-called ebauchons – also known as blocks – were sawn from the root burls of the Erica shrub, forming the valuable foundation for high-quality pipes. The work was demanding and not without risk. Safety standards as we know them today were hardly present at the time. It was not uncommon for workers to leave the mill without all ten fingers.

It was precisely in this environment that Mimmo grew up. At an early age, he developed a feel for this extraordinary material. Even back then, his father’s mill differed noticeably from many other operations around Taggia. The focus was uncompromisingly on quality rather than quantity.

It was therefore hardly surprising that Mimmo joined the family business at the age of 18. While many briar wood mills in the surrounding region gradually had to close, his family’s operation remained successful. The reason lay in the transformation of the pipe scene: more and more Freehand pipe makers began to view their work as pieces of art. Such creations do not require large quantities of wood – but they do demand briar wood of exceptional quality.

This development eventually led to an encounter that would become formative for Mimmo: his collaboration with Teddy Knudsen. Up to that point, Mimmo had processed, sorted, and sourced countless pieces of briar wood during trips to Calabria, Corsica, and Greece. Yet he had never made a pipe of his own. Meeting Teddy Knudsen, one of the great Danish masters of pipe making, opened up an entirely new perspective for him.

From that moment on, an intense learning phase began. Mimmo worked tirelessly on his skills – practicing, discarding, and starting again. Over the years, numerous pipes were created, yet none of them were offered for sale. His standards were high: only when the quality matched his own ideal did he want to present his work to customers.

All the greater was our excitement when Mimmo personally approached us at Intertabac in 2019 and asked whether we would like to become his retailer in Germany. Naturally, our answer did not take long. His work speaks for itself. Moreover, he possesses something that only a few pipe makers have access to: the finest briar wood – often even some of the most exceptional pieces available.

Mimmo’s pipes are precisely crafted smoking instruments. At the same time, they carry the character of a sculpture. Each pipe reflects craftsmanship, a deep understanding of the material, and a genuine appreciation for the natural beauty of briar wood.

For this reason, our selection will always include only a small number of his works. Every single pipe is a special piece – one that we appreciate just as much as the aficionados who will later enjoy it.

Alongside his work as a pipe maker, Mimmo continues to run his briar wood mill. From there, he supplies some of the most renowned pipe makers worldwide. Among them are Tom Eltang and CO Pipes, both of whom greatly appreciate his exceptional briar wood.

Perhaps you too will sense a little of the special fascination behind this traditional craft. Despite modern tools, the essence of this work has changed very little over the centuries. If the spark catches, a pipe from Mimmo will bring a piece of this remarkable craftsmanship into your home.
