Poul Winslow Pipes: Eccentric Works of Art and Classic Masterpieces

The Danish pipe artist Poul Winslow is considered a true all-round talent. Had he not become one of the most outstanding pipe makers in the world, he could have made a name for himself as an art painter. His extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship seemed innate. Yet a stroke of luck also significantly shaped his career: The famous pipe maker Preben Holm recognized the talent of the 17-year-old Poul Winslow early on and brought him into his workshop—a fateful encounter between two generations.

The Formative Partnership: Preben Holm and Poul Winslow

Preben Holm, who had already worked for the legendary Pibe Dan store in Copenhagen as a teenager and whose style greatly contributed to the international recognition of Danish pipes, passed away in 1989 at just 42 years of age. He was one of the defining masters of his generation, alongside Erik Nording.

A New Beginning with Character: Poul Winslow's Freehand Pipes

As a token of appreciation, Preben Holm even continued to pay Winslow one-third of his salary during his military service—an extraordinary gesture of trust. Together, they built a thriving company with around 45 employees that produced pipes for a discerning international clientele.

With Holm’s untimely death and the closure of the company in 1985, Winslow faced a new challenge. Yet he demonstrated courage and entrepreneurial spirit: With his own pipe workshop, he established the Poul Winslow brand—today a synonym for the finest craftsmanship alongside names like Tom Eltang and Poul Ilsted.

In his workshop at his home in Hvidovre near Copenhagen, Winslow perfected his distinctive style. Through a collaboration with Stanwell, Denmark’s leading pipe manufacturer, he showcased his artistry at international trade fairs—an important stepping stone toward his later independence.
